Green Hope 1 @ Durham- Jordan 1
Green Hope started off the year against an old adversary, Durham
Jordan. The Falcons have never beaten Jordan - tying them the last
two meetings - and tonight would be the same.
Green Hope got off to a good start as forward Ryan Lockhart broke
through the defense on a one-on-one opportunity, only to miss over
the cross bar. The defense kept Jordan in check and limited the
Jordan opportunities to 9 shots throughout the match. Jonathan Schwartz,
making the most of his senior year debut, was spectacular in goal,
coming up with clean saves time and again.
Midway through the first half, Taylor Estrada, a transfer from
Atlanta, GA, beat a Durham midfielder, dished it to Pat Danford,
who played a fantastic 70 yard ball to Nick Roos on the run. Nick
buried the shot from 18 yards into the lower left hand corner. Green
Hope 1, Jordan 0.
The second half was a great start for Green Hope as they controlled
possession and kept Jordan on their heels for 20 minutes. Unfortunately,
the last pass and the finishing from the Falcons is not in mid-season
form and GH was unable to capitalize on their opportunities. Thomas
Lindsey had some fair shots at goal, with one rocket heading to
the lower left hand corner of the goal that was saved by the Jordan
keeper.
Fifteen minutes from time, Jordan earned a corner kick. Jordan
served a ball into the box 8 yards from the goal and were able to
win a header that found the back of the net. Green Hope 1- Jordan
1.
Both teams struggled in the heat for the last 10 minutes and as
time expired the game lost flow, as the midfielders were no longer
able to keep the shape and possession turned into desperation boom
ball.
The Falcons should be encouraged by the super play in goal by Schwartz,
the increased possession by the midfield, the solid defense in the
back by Mark Trawick, Eric Desloge and Eric Butterly, and the scoring
touch of Nick Roos.
Green Hope will travel Wednesday to face the 2004 State Champions,
Leesville Road.
