Green Hope 4 vs. Fuquay Varina 1
The Falcons played their second conference game of the season Monday
night against Fuquay Varina at Falcon stadium. GH is still without
the injured Nick Roos and Ryan Lockhart, two senior forwards still
recovering from an ankle injury and a broken foot, respectively.
Green Hope had the run of play for a majority of the first half
and several opportunities to score. Mark Trawick played a superb
ball between the FV defense that led Martin Murphy onto a one-on-one
with the keeper. Martins attempt was thwarted by a great keeper
save.
Against the run of play, FV won a ball in the corner, got past
a GH player who over-committed and the Bengal served the ball into
the back post to an unmarked teammate who calmly tapped it into
the goal. FV up 1-0.
The Falcons fought back to equalize on Evan Paussas clean
strike at goal from about 18 yards away. Evan continues to find
the scorers touch and has established himself as a significant threat
to score every game.
The half ended at 1-1. Following a spirited half-time discussion
by the coaches and the players regarding the expectations and sub-par
performance, the seniors and captains held a brief player only meeting
to sort things out for the second half. The results were evident
immediately.
GH came out for the second half with renewed enthusiasm, resolve
and focus. The players moved the ball around the field with precision
and pace. Defensively, the team held their positions better and
stopped chasing the ball. Goalkeeper, Jonathan Schwartz was quick
off his line and spot-on with his distribution.
Evan Paussa netted his second goal of the game off of a well played
ball by Ryan Dowd in the box. Martin Murphy scored his second goal
in 2 games and John Hindman made the best of his playing time with
a well struck LOW shot in the left hand corner.
The Falcons wasted many goal scoring opportunities, but their improved
play in the second half was duly noted.
Fuquay Varina has a young team of excellent talent. Several Freshman
and Sophomores start and are skilled players. The Bengals will soon
be a Tri-7 power.
Green Hope's record improves to 6-1-2 and 2-0 in the Tri-7 conference.
