Green Hope 2 at Fuquay 1
Green Hope traveled to Fuquay Varina Wednesday night and came home
with a 2-1 win. The Falcons played very well for most of the night,
but just had trouble finishing. In the first 20 minutes, John Hindman
hit the post, then missed a header over the goal. In addition, Martin
Murphy and Kyle Bandy had some very good chances that were not converted
either. The build up and creation of chances was very strong, but
the team just had some unlucky bounces not to score.
After 20 minutes the coaching staff decided to change some of the
line-up to get some more players some game time experience while
the score was tied and still under pressure. Gaining this kind of
experience will only help the team as a whole in the play-offs.
The level of play from the Falcons remained high and the boys continued
to create opportunities. However, one of the Fuquay Varina players
made a superb individual effort down the left flank, beating two
Falcons and hitting a shot from 18 in the left corner of the goal
for the FV lead 1-0.
At the half, the Falcons made some corrections and came onto the
pitch with resolve to get back in the game. They continued the pressure
and peppered the Fuquay goal with shots, but the quality was lacking.
Finally, GH took advantage of an opportunity. Off a long throw-in
by John Hindman Taylor Estrada redirected a header from an incredible
angle into the goal to tie the score at 1-1. Within a few minutes
of the first goal, Hindman won a ball down the end line and dribbled
with pace toward the Fuquay goal, the keeper had to make a decision
to stay or come challenge for the ball. The keeper decided to challenge
and Hindman made the right decision to play the ball in low across
the box and Nick Buttterly tucked it home for the 2-1 lead. Later,
Justin Taylor served a wonderful ball with his right foot to Kyle
Bandy. Bandy hit a first time volley from 16-yards off of the left
post.
Fuquay put a lot of pressure on Green Hope near the end and the
Falcons dropped an additional forward back into midfield to absorb
some of the pressure. GH was able to hold on and escape with a 2-1
victory.
The Falcons only have one week left of the regular season. The
team hosts Lee County Monday night for Senior night and then travel
to Athens Dr. on Wednesday for the final game of the season. The
Falcons are now 13-4-1 and 9-2-1 in the Tri-8 conference.
