Broughton 1 vs Green Hope 0 (OT) State Semi-Finals

Green Hope travelled to Broughton for the state semi-finals of the 4A State playoffs. The Falcons were confident and ready for the challenge to face an undefeated Broughton team (26-0-1). The game started and within 3 passes, Broughton had an open chance on the right side, but the Broughton player put it way over the bar. This seemed to wake up Green Hope and the Falcons started to use the width of the field and open spaces to take an advantage of possession.

The Falcons got some great chances down the left side, but the final touch was bit off. Green Hope took a quick free-kick, but the talented Broughton keeper was able to quickly get over to make the save. Green Hope took some questionable shots from too far out that were easily saved, but they did hit one that was dipping over the keeper, but again he made a super save.

Broughton had a few chances as well, but none as dangerous as Green Hope's and Alex Long was well positioned for everything when he was called into action: he was spot on.

The half ended 0-0.

In the second half, Green Hope continued to pressure, but Broughton was able to get a little more attack. They were able to get some crosses in, corners and throw-ins, but again, the Green Hope defense was spectacular and Long was on his game. Alex made one of the best saves of the year when a shot was heading for the upper right corner of the goal and Alex dove to his left and parried it over the bar.

Green Hope had a great chance on a fee kick from 25 yards away. Magnus Sorensen took a left footed shot that squarely hit off the right Broughton post.

The second half ended 0-0.

In the first of 2- 10 minute overtimes, Broughton cleared the ball to one of their forwards, Green Hope was in good defensive shape with all 4 defenders, but the Broughton player made a great play by getting by two defenders and burying his shot in the lower part of the net for the 1-0 Broughton lead. Green Hope had 15 minutes left in OT to tie it up.

The Falcons moved into a more attacking formation and made a quick sub. The Falcons pressed and had a great chance as the ball was served from the left side, but just as it had been all night, the point blank shot from six yards was directly to the Broughton keeper.

Time expired and the season is over. The Falcons were never intimated and really took it to Broughton. It was probably one of the best games each player played all year until it got to the final shot or pass. The team stepped up in a play-off and played with heart, desire and spirit, but Broughton had one player that ended up making a great play to win the game. A great season for the Falcons and a fantastic team to be a part of!
